Description

Position Summary

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer of the Medical Center (CUIMC), this position serves as a member of CUIMC and CU's senior leadership team/s. It will play a significant role in advancing CUIMC's mission in teaching, research, and patient care.

The Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) will lead the Human Resources function at CUIMC and focus on all aspects of talent management which include recruitment, onboarding, mentoring, performance management, retention strategies, leadership, and organizational assessment, training, coaching, employee and labor relations, compliance, employee service center, operations pertaining to university employees working in affiliate hospital space.

This position will be supported by the University's shared-services organization, including benefits and compensation design and administration, labor relations leadership, human resources information systems management, centralized policy and planning, payroll, and HR project management services. They will also work as a Columbia University Central Human Resources senior team member to ensure consistency across Campuses.

The CHRO directly supervises a staff of 12. The team includes 5 Senior HR Business Partners, 1 Director of HR Operations, 1 Asst Director of HR Operations, 2 HR Generalists, 2 Employee Service Center staff, and 1 Executive Assistant, the day-to-day direction of 1 Director, Labor Relations, and 1 Chief Staff Diversity Officer, and oversees an operating budget of $3.5M.

Stakeholders and Primary Clients, Client Groups

  • CUIMC Central Administration consists of the Office of the Executive Vice President, CUIMC Operations, Finance, and Development.
  • Deans, Vice Deans, and senior leadership (including business managers/departmental administrators) within Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons, College of Dental Medicine, Mailman School of Public Health, and School of Nursing.
  • Leadership and staff of Columbia's Faculty Practice Organization
  • Officers, Non-union Support Staff, and Union employees
  • Faculty and Officers of Research **

** These groups are supported primarily by Faculty Affairs. CUIMC Human Resources assists when requested.  


Responsibilities

  • Represent CUIMC to the HR community and contribute to the development of University-wide policies and procedures while playing a leadership role in all areas of HR governance affecting employees at CUIMC.
  • Support the development and implementation of tactics supporting the Strategic Plan for the Medical School.
  • Deliver value-based solutions to various client organizations through consulting, coaching, creative problem solving, business understanding, and proactive interventions. Provide leadership to the HR generalist, operations, and Employee Service Center teams. Use metrics to establish trends, quantify and report out on results.
  • Partner with Senior Executive Team to affect ongoing efforts in organizational change and shift to a more transparent and accountable business-oriented culture.
  • Develop innovative and cost-effective HR programs focused on recruiting high-caliber employees and the creation of retention and development programs for high potential talent.
  • Contribute and manage University programs in areas of compliance, benefits, and learning and development.
  • Increase opportunity for greater employee, client, and HR network, inter-campus and external communication programs.
  • Implement efficient/effective technology-driven services and process improvements
  • Engage as the senior CUIMC representative for labor relations issues, multiple bargaining units.
  • Manage relationships and programs in cooperation with affiliate hospital/s.
  • Provide oversight and innovative compensation support for the unique market staff population.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required. At least 12+ years of significant experience and a successful track record of delivering results in large, complex, decentralized organizations with diverse employee populations is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • An advanced degree is strongly preferred.
  • Healthcare experience preferred (academic medical center, hospital).
  • Human Resources Certification is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with external agencies such as the Joint Commission, Department of Homeland Security, etc. also strongly preferred.

Other Requirements

  • Direct management experience of a high-performance workforce is mandatory.
  • Possess excellent communication and relationship management skills and the attributes necessary to lead a motivated, high-performing staff.
  • Demonstrate the ability to interact comfortably with a wide range of constituents and establish rapport with employees at all levels. S/he will be a team, consensus builder, and an advocate for HR and school/department extended HR Network.
  • Understand and thrive in a world-class academic medical and research environment. S/he must operate in a highly complex, multi-disciplinary operation where success is achieved through relationship and influence management.
  • Possess strong business acumen and provide cost/value-based strategic direction across multiple operating units.
  • Experience in accomplishing a significant cultural and organizational transformation. Building service-oriented HR functions and implementing effective and efficient processes.
  • Must be able to provide "success stories" of coaching senior executives and mentoring and developing high-caliber employees and teams.
  • The individual will be a world-class generalist with deep knowledge of employee and labor relations (multiple bargaining units) and all aspects of talent management from recruitment to onboarding, performance management, training/development, and retention.
  • Serves as an expert advisor to leadership, business, administrative, and academic units.
